Neal,

Yes you could jack the car up and turn the wheel, the other should
follow, or just jack up one wheel and try to trun it. Of course if the
clutches are out of the sure grip, it could act different.

 Well here I go showing my stoopidity again but while we are talking
rears, how would a feller confirm that the car hes looking at actuaally
has sure-grip as the owner claims. I know sure grip cases have S stamped
on them,and a special little tag under a bolt, but that doesnt really
mean anything ,the sure grip unit could have been removed at one time
and sold off. 
    Should one jack up the rear and try turning a wheel? The  other side
    should move right along with it, correct? Or is nothing that easy?
