On some of the engines they moved the timing marks to the opsite side due to having stuff In the way to time it. You probably need the later balancer that has the timing mark moved to driver side.

  Dave,

Yup it's summertime when we get all the sunshine. Actually the sun just went down not too long ago (about 1040pm or so). Kinda nice.

We had a long day in the shop today, that's why I'm even questioning myself about the timing. The guy I'm working with (basically paying him to help me rebuild) was confused when we pulled the engine, because someone had put a new-style 318 timing chain cover on, and the timing marks were completely out of whack - it just didn't make sense.

Anyhow, I'm sure tomorrow will be better, after a good nights sleep!

  Thanks for your help,
  Andy

No, I'm in Texas. I'm just a night owl. I bet the sun is still up where you
are, or is that in winter that it does that?

Are you sure you've got the right cylinder? Front on the driver's side?
Assuming so, install the timing chain as previously noted and then turn the
crank 360 degrees. Both valves should then be closed. If that's the case,
you might want to consider degreeing the cam to be on the safe side. Comp
Cams' website has full blown instructions for that but it will take a little
  time for a first timer.
