Neal,
First you need to clean the contacts. For all these switches the best thing 
is Color TV Tuner cleaner. It's a spray that takes the corrosion and dirt off 
of the contacts. Don't sand or file them because the won't properly close when 
you remove metal. 
You can sometimes find it at a really good electronic supply / radio TV parts 
place, or you can get it online at Antique  Electronic Supply. Antique 
Electronics Look under Tech supplies, on there it has a different name. (Jif Action) 
Works great on your headlight switch dimmer! You will also find switch 
lubricants there. 
While you are there, check out the NOVIS polish. This is the best stuff to 
clean and polish plastic parts like tail light lenses etc.
