I did my frame ties the same way as Earl has described. I just cut into the  
front of the spring box using the 2 x 2 boxed steel and welded it on 3 sides 
and  the same at the front keeping it even with the bottom of the subframe. 
Didn't  use any gussets though. I put the 2 x 2 into the back subframe as far as 
I could  so I could weld the two holes on the bottom of  it also to the frame 
tie.  And I didn't have to cut the floor at all.
