Tom,

Sounds like the carb floods or chokes when a load is put on it. First, check 
the gas.  Extract the old gas and add new. Replace fuel filter in process 
with a clear one to inspect gas in route to carb.  Second, check your 
air/fuel mixture screws on the carb.  Third, while in park/neutral, rev 
motor until it either bogs or hits a RPM you are comfortable with.  If it 
doesn't bog at a higher RPM, then it is a load issue.  If it does bog at a 
lower RPM, it could possibly be a carb issue.  Fourth, check all the plugs 
to insure proper firing.  These are just a few things that can be done 
before pulling off the carb. Had the same problem on my '68 Barracuda.  
Turned out to be a somewhat clogged fuel filter.  It let in enough gas for 
idle and slow speeds, but choked the carb when a load was applied.
