i got a new solid state unit at autozone and the original case top mounted right on and replaced the newer one and you could only see a little bit of the circuit boad sticking out the left side when done. It looks just like the original(well the case is the original)

I seem to remember stumbling across a vendor that sold an electronic
voltage regulator that was housed in the old-style mechanical casing and
bolted-up "normal" ... anybody remember who that might be?  I don't want
the funky look of a newer regulator on my car, but like the advantages
of an electronic regulator ...
