Trans problem

Group: I finally got my 413 engine in my 62 Dodge. It has a 727 trans with a 
2500 stall recently rebuilt. My problem is that the trans is somehow "stuck" 
in the sense that it won't shift gears and it seems to be locked up as though a 
trans brake is on (doesn't have one). I cannot rev the engine as the car acts 
as though it is in gear  but the brakes are on. This trans was installed by 
some friends who work for a local shop and they admittedly are no experts when 
it comes to the 727 trans. Suggestions/recommendations are most welcome.
