It's likely to be coolant mixing with the oil.  If you know someone that 
has an exhaust gas analyzer (the kind usually used for smog 
certificates), here's an old trick:

Set the analyzer on manual read, then place the wand near the radiator 
opening (cap off) with the engine running ... if you have a situation 
(e.g. blown gasket, crack, etc.) where exhause gas is passing into the 
cooling chambers, the hydrocarbons will cause the HC meter to jump a bit 
...

Don't touch the end of the wand to the coolant ... you'll hurt the 
machine ...
