It's pretty simple.
A knurled collar style nut on the speedo, and the trans end inserts into 
the tailshaft, and retained with a 1/4" cap screw holding  a retainer plate.
The cable could be broken, or the pinion gear in the tailshaft housing, 
stripped, or missing.
