Have done the road trip thing several times.  Won a rust free fender on eBay 
for cheap for my 65 Valiant.  Drove 200 or so miles from VA up onto PA to 
pick it up.  And of course there was no damage whatsoever upon our return 
back to VA.  Then there was the drive to southern NJ to pick up a set of 
LCAs with sway bar tabs and a set of A Body 4 piston disc brake set-up.  An 
a drive down to southern VA to pick up a rust-free 65 Coronet trunklid. 
Unfortunately none of these trips weren't in one of the vintage cars.
