Ken, I have a factory inline 2x4 on my 451 that is called a single split 
plane.  All right side ports are connected to a plenum as is the left side.  I 
kept the carbs non progressive and added 4 hole spacers.  Seems to run good.  The 
2x4 on my poly ran much better with the spacers added, but deeper gears would 
definitely help.  Joe
