Dave and Bob - thanks a bunch.  I'll wet sand first and then get some  info 
on grit compounds from my local paint supplier.  How about those  cotton pads 
that are about 4" diameter and 1/2" wide for the buffing?  They  should mount 
on a 3/8" drill.  Otherwise I'll be looking like Popeye before  I'm done. ;-)
