When I drive my 65 Dart wagon, my steering also feels pretty loose (all 
original parts).  Years back before I took for 65 GT convert off the road 
for a full resto, it was the same way.  Replaced pitman and idler arm, which 
did make a difference.  A front end rebuild would certainly help.  As far as 
swapping to manual steering, fairly easy to do as I believe manual boxes (A, 
B, C Body) from around 62 or so through the mid 70s would bolt right on. 
You would need to obtain a manual steering column or the PS to manual 
adapter.
