I just bought one long distance, and I made sure that I had a firm understanding with the owner of what I expected when I showed up to get the car. I made notes so I would not forget anything when I called him. I think you start to develop a feeling for how honest a guy is as the negotiations develop. If you have the feeling deep in your gut that things might not be right, listen to your gut. If the guy is positive, and responds straight up to your request for information, your probably on the right track. Remember the old saying "Buyer Beware". Earl I live in Ohio and my buddy bought a NICE 65 Chevelle SS from a guy in California. He phoned the guy several times and told him the areas he wanted to see on the car and asked lots of questions. The guy took pics and emailed them to my buddy. He got the car shipped to him for about $900 I think, and there were no surprises when the car arrived. This was a faily high dollar car, so the guy was willing to do some extra work to sell the car. If the owner wants to sell you his car, he should be willing to do the same.
