Re: Car Selling Scams

Several years ago, I listed a 64 NewYorker roller for FREE .... just to try to keep it out of the crusher.  Got a reply offering 10,000 for it.  I emailed back that it was free...
at which time I got a reply to " please dont try to change the price" .  So I said ... OK 10,000 it is.  The next reply was... they would send a check they had gotten from
someone else for 20,000... please refund his "agent"  the 10,000 when he came to pick it up.... needles to say, I didn't fall for that ...
I guess just don't take anything less than a certified check or money order.  Crazy stuff out there.

Selling my '65 Belvedere. So far, I've gotten two bogus checks. Both were for exactly $10,000 more than the agreed upon price. One was a stolen check written on a closed account. The other was a fake check using a stolen bank account number. Always verify the check, I'd suggest even a certified check (these were not).

Lessons/observations. Be suspicious if:
1. they ask few or no questions.
2. Agree to your asking price quickly.
3. They are pushing you to cash the check - like, do it NOW - (so you don't have time to verify it).
4. If they send more money than you agreed. (shipping cost are not $10,000)
5. Would you spend $30-40,000 without seeing the car? I wouldn't.

My question is: how do you get paid when you sell a car?
