Octane Today and in the 60's

Somewhere in that foggy closet I call my brain, I seem to remember that the octane of the gas today is lower than back in the good old days. We didn't start calling it pi-- water for no reason. Anybody got a better recollection? 

My project '68 383/2bbl is supposed to run on regular. Which likely means my "Ghost car", a '65 Satellite Convertible with a 383/4bbl engine needs to run premium.
