Yea, I thought $1000 was a bit high, I also thought $650 was high to fix the heater and put on a useless tranny mount. I talked to my friend with a 65 300, he pulled his tranny, had it rebuilt, and put it back in himself for $500. He thought it was a lot of work and worth the extra $500 to have someone else do it.

Better find a different tranny shop. If you pull and install you should be
able to get it rebuilt for under 500. I can do one for a bout 350 to 450
not counting the converter.
