I need a little help from those of you who have installed the Pertronix Ignitor kit. I recently installed the pertronix kit, flamethrower coil, plug wires and plugs in my 65 poly 318. I intially bypassed the ballast resistor and connected the red Ignitor wire directly to the positive side of the coil since the Flamethrower coil has internal resistance. This seemed to work fine except the car didn't start as easily as it did with the points. It would always start, but it seemed like the starter was really struggling to turn the motor over. Could this be a voltage problem?
Since the Pertonix instructions suggest using a ballast resistor if one already exists, I decided to move the red Ignitor wire to the ignition side of the ballast resistor to see if this improved anything. The ignition side is the driver's side of the ballast resistor right? When I tried starting the car, I saw smoke coming from the negative battery terminal/cable and immediately stopped.
After looking at the wiring diagram for my Coronet, I'm a little confused. There's IGN1 and IGN2. It looks like IGN2 bypasses the ballast resistor for cranking, and IGN1 powers the regulator and coil through the ballast resistor. The only option I haven't tried is connecting the red Ignitor wire directly to the ignition wire.Any help from you that have successfully installed this kit is greatly appreciated and sorry for the long post.
Thanks Tony
