The ring and pinion set are specific to the case. That is, you can't use a
489 pinion in a 742 case, etc. The carriers (part the ring gear bolts to)
will swap between all three cases, provided you use carrier bearings for the
original case. Example: You have a clutch type Sure Grip carrier from a 742
with a badly pitted gear, and you have a 489 one wheel peel with a good
gear. You can put the 489 ring gear on the sure grip, and install them in
the 489 case, but when doing so you must use the carrier bearings from the
742 case (or new replacements of the same type).
Similarly, if oyu go buy an Auburn sure grip to put in your 742, you need
the 489 carrier bearings.

I just swapped the 3:23 suregrip into my Polara this weekend and it made
me wonder if all 8.75 gears are interchangable? I put a 489 chunk into
my 741 case and it went right in. The open rear I took out also had 3:23
gears. I'd like to put in a set of 3:73's. If anyone is interested in a
swap, let me know. Having a lift made it soooooo much easier. I had a
hard time getting the chunk out as the rear came out of a car that sat
in a junkyard for 25 years. I never would have gotten in out rolling
around on the floor!
