sorry, can't tell you there, I've never tried using the newer cable. Seems to me though, that the Nut (or what ever you might call it that you can tighten to the back of the speedo) on the older one was bigger, but I'm not sure. I think I oiled the one in our 77 Fury once and noticed it was a different size. Other wise, I think the cable itself inside should still have the square ending on it. But all I can give you is a vague memory, suppose I could look this weekend, but I don't have time to right now.

hi,

the trans end im ok on.  newer trans uses big gear , older (63) uses  
small gear.  and i know there are also adapters for that end of the  
trans.   what i dont know is if they are all the same on the speedo  
end.
