Step up to 86s, that's what I use, and it sounds like you might be running a little rich. Remember, you want to plugs to be a good charcoal black, but no build up. If they turn white, its way too lean. But the 86s will run hotter and last a little longer, and you might try Champion too. You can't really go any hotter unless you have electronic ignition, especially MSD or something.

Is there a better brand of plug for the big block street motor than the   
autolites I've been using?  The 85's I've been using seem to be too cold as  they  
are sooted up.  Course, the motor's been doing a lot of idling and it  is a  
stock 66 HP 383 w/beeper cam.  Suggestions on brand - heat range  welcomed.   Joe
