  Ok Robert perhaps I can clear something up for you. Mother used (and still does) 4 (abcd) sizes of pistons and cyl bores (abcd) and all are considered std bore. They match the pistons to the bores to obtain the proper clearance.Most engines even today are likely to have one of more slightly different sized pistons and cyl bores. That's what the abcd markings are under the paint on the side of the cyl  block. The differences are slight 2-3 tenths but when you buy new oversize pistons they are all the same size. (hopefully) Therefore you bore & hone the cyl's all to one size. Yes the clearance is in the piston. Hope that helps, Mike
