Nothing wrong with a 340 either although if I was racing you I would build a 360 instead  however 
especially in the early A body cars a 273 hipo was a killer. Even after the 340 came out there were a lot of folks that would rather have the 273 hipo for a while . Sort of like the 327 crowd after the 350 came out. The 273 formula S just loved to run.
I remember the Petric brothers of Ottawa area. (One now owns petric ford. )
The other  brother had a 273 Valaint called Mr Pure Pure Stock . I have seen on several occasions him race his brother's 396 Chevelle heads up and more often then not beat it. 
Also from Napanee there was Ronnie Huggins with a 65 Valiant. He ruled the streets in that town for many years with his done 273 . I have seen him run and beat handily 396 4 speeds  Big block Canadian pontiacs , 327 Chevy IIs and 340s. 
An early cuda with a properly done 273  (say just blue printed and balanced) would give any later dart 340 a heart attack. They were a really well balanced combo and were well thought out. My all time favourite was a 2 dr post 273  Formula S valiant I saw gymkanna racing  in Montreal. it was bone stock but well driven and took all comers at the event  including some corvettes and foriegn sports cars. 
The sound of that single square outlet exhaust has lived with me these many years since. 
Remember Mopar even planned on a 275 hp version for D stock before NHRA refused to accept it  for certification and a few prototypes were actually built.  
Now i have gone and woke up these memories I need to find me a 273  Hi po. 
One of the best mopars ever built I would say and gets the least respect. Most have never actually seen or heard one  let alone driven one. The sound has never been equaled. Respectfully if you havent heard one and ridden in one you really cant appreciate these little dynamos.
The Chevy guys used to hide from them. Even the 327 Chevy IIs. 
A company named Griffith  used to put them in Sunbeam Alpines and run them against the Sunbeam tigers with the ford v8s . I have seen them at St Jovite  north of Montreal during the heydays of road racing. They had no trouble holding their own. I believe they were put together in New York but I am not sure.
So bottom line if you build a 273 early A body and are cruisin  down the road and approached by a 340 Dart or Duster  will you get your doors blown off? Absolutely not . They were that potent. 
We tend to think that because the 273 Hi Po had 235 HP and the 318 had 235 that that was about the same but it wasnt. The 318 was a plodder while the 273 was a thoroughbred and loved to rev and run. No comparison. The 273 though needs to be in an early A-body to really perform. 
Has anyone got an original 273 Hi Po Valiant or Baracuda running on our list? I suspect not but I hope I am wrong. 
They are rare , fast and fun. and apologise to no one.
