Worked at a 60 year old theater growing up. The lady would not let us clean any glass with paper towels - always had to be newspaper. According to my theater boss, the black ink rubs into any scratches and coats it. This is invisible to our eye, but the scratch is coated in black and does not reflect the sun. The doors were spotless and scratch free and extremely old for glass.

Jim is right, newspaper does give the "invisible" look. Spray on Windex or other nice window cleaner and wipe down with newspaper. The newspaper gets wet and breaks apart, so have plenty of paper on hand.

Your situation may be far past the following detailers "trick", but once you
have them clean again, try this: After cleaning with windex, whatever, get
this morning's newspaper & rub the glass. I don't know why it works, but it does,
makes the glass "invisible".

PS A magazine article about this discussed the changes in ink, from
petroleum base to soybean, claimed didn't change the desired effect.
