Yes, used to have one on a Camaro.  
It was real fast and makes it hard to miss a shift, but it's really
suited for a 1/4 mile car.  I think it would quickly become a pain in
the rear for a daily driver.

has anyone heard of a 4 speed shifter called a "veritgate" or
something like that?  Its by Mr. Gasket, and apparently has no
side-to-side movement.  You push down for 1-2 and up for 3-4.  Just
curious about it and how it drives, since I've never seen or even
heard of such a thing.
