We have been converting 3/4 ton danas . very easy. We have ben buying them "Cheap" without the full floating axles and brake drums. often with 410 or 456 gears already and chopping the ends off, buying a set of ends from Moser etc and welding them on and ordering a set of aftermarket axles.
Best one cost us $110 (Can) or about $85 US, $85 for the new axle ends and $400 for axles and bearings. It took about a full day to do the mod . We have a year on it now with no trouble. Shortening or street converting a dana is much easier because of the smooth axle tubes which are much easier to reference to square than say the 8 3/4 or ford 9" . Several workable solutions exist including even the common carpenters square. We chopped the end with a chop saw then squared them up to the square by hand till they were right on ,then tacked them carefully and rechecked and tapped till we were happy. We then welded them a bit at a time (3/4") and opposite to each other We know we got it right because the axles went in with a gentle push by hand. Now after a years running we know its good.
Cheap strong and fun. Once you remove the words hurry and exotic from any combination it is amazing how easy the work becomes and what can be accomplished.
There are literly millions of these diffs around. i would guess most wreckers would have at least ten in any given yard and since they dont break there is no market for them otherwise.
just an idea that we tried for fun.
