Sorry to post and then walk away for a day and a half but s***t happens. 
 The screen is installed between the intake mainfold and the 1" carb 
spacer.  I've heard it said that they atomize the fuel better.  Just 
wondered if anyone had any concrete evidence one way or the other.  The 
one on my car was installed when I bought it.  What got me thinking more 
about it was something that happened recently.  It had been @ 25 - 30 
degrees overnight and my carb doesn't have a choke so I was having a 
little trouble getting it started even though the day had warmed to 
about 45 degrees.  The normal procedure is to pump the hell out of it to 
get it to start.  But since it had been colder this day it was a little 
tougher.  While I was fooling around with it I noticed raw gas sitting 
on the intake outside the carb where the screen is.  Making me think 
that it had weeped through the screen.  And if the gas can do that then 
it probably is also one hell of a vacuum leak.
Anyway I think I'll be taking it out.
