Don, this sounds like a great tip! so, just to help me understand how to do this, I gave it a try last night, on my warmed up Poly. here's what I did- measured out the 2.21" with masking tape on a ruler, then cut a piece to length (2.21"). facing the front of the car I stuck the tape on the dampener, going left to right from the TDC mark. and made a white mark at where the tape ended. then pulled the tape leaving a clean edge. so, I fired up the Poly and warmed it up (timing light hooked up). checked my initial adv. witch is just off the Poly's gage at about 17 degrees or so? hmm, then had a buddy wind up the Poly to 3000RPM. this brought the new mark I made to about the middle of the gage at about 5 degrees on the Poly's gage, that's mounted above the dampener. so, do I add this 5 degrees to the 32/34? am I to far advanced, both initial and total? did I do this right? or have I missed the boat? the Poly seems to run fine! except the poor compression and build up of crank case pressure, if run at higher then 3000RPM for a long duration. say at 3500, on the HWY, full load, averaging 85MPH, oil well start coming out the breathers, dip stick tube and anywhere else it can find away. but thats another story and everything is fine when I drive it mellow. hope I got this right and thanks for the tip! and any help with this Schuyler My Poly has a reground cam, specs are: intake 270, 206 @.050, lift 445 exhaust 274, 212 @ .050, lift 445 110 degree LC 52 degrees overlap also, removed vacuum adv. and welded the vacuum adv. plate down so it won't move. The heads were redone with new springs, a little porting etc... It will give you a reference point towork from with a non advance timing light. You set it to that mark at3000 RPM. Probably should not run the vaccum advance with a hot cam. "Don
