there is foil duct tape made that works not too bad/ it is shiny like chrome 
not the dull grey stuff /its approx 2 inches wide / just tape over the item 
you want to recover and trim excess with a sharp razor blade / its not 
perfect but works on a driver type car / i used it in the same situation on 
the rear side window exterior trim on my 63 ply station wagon  /you can get 
it at places like home depot or lowes for 10$
