That sounds about right Neal, the ignition switch can just dangle and yes you need to hook the two ampmeter wires together to keep power. I would tape off, tie up and lable any other wires you disconnect so they don't accidently get shorted out and you know where to hook them back up later. I also suggest disconnecting the negative battery cable while your working on the car and only hooking it back up when you need to start it.
