Thanks DodgerAs far as I know they are the correct bolts, about 3/16" thick head I guess. Wish I'd taken a pic of them too now!
I've since been told by the guy that rebuilt the trans for us, and fitted the converter, that it's not unusual to have very little room between the bolt head and the back of the block, due to manufacturing tolerances etc. He also confirmed that higher stall converters have a smaller pcd, sorry bolt circle diameter, so it's common practice to leave the dust shield off.
Might have a go at pressing out the area inline with the bolts to give some clearance. If it doesn't work out, s'pose we could always just leave it off.
