Electrical Detective Work?

My car's front left turn signal/parking lamp won't come on.

I figure I just need to examine the circuit to see where the problem is, but 
I have really no idea how to do that! Any hints on how to proceed, after the 
obvious stuff like making sure there's a good bulb in place?
