fuel sending units

I purchased a fuel sending unit from Firestone Collectibles on ebay 
claiming to be for a 63, 64, 65 polara and fury. I had it installed and 
it just doesnt operate right. I have driven it about 60 miles, 318 ci, 
and the gauge is still above the full mark. Actually the needle goes up 
to the midpoint on the F. Now that I have a few miles on it, when I 
accelerate it does drop down almost on the Full line, normal speeds or 
slowing down, up it goes again.
After the shop installed it they mentioned that it was different than 
the orignal, The longer portion was shorter than the original and the 
shorter portion was longer than the origianl. Any thoughts. I think it 
is compelety wrong.
The seller has said he hasnt had any problems from anyone before. I have 
asked him for the part number, no luck. I offered to send him my old one 
and send me a match back. no luck, still thinks it is the correct one he 
sent me and says i should run an electrical check on it or maybe it is 
something in my gauge cluster.
Any comments and thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
