valve guide seal-spring?

I'm trying to remove the valve keepers on a 383 but the tool I borrowed 
seems to compress the spring "up" instead of compressing the spring 
down, away from the keeper. Here is a somewhat blurry picture that shows 
what I mean:

Pilot error, or do I need a different tool?
