cone type rebuilds

The cone type are easily repairable too as long as the spider gear hasnt spun. With the unit out ofthe case sitting on the bench it is about 1 hours work. What happens to these units is te cone bottoms out in its cavity and nolonger has any wedge quality to make it drive both wheels. I chck them in the lathe and machine about 090 off of the small end where tey are bottomed out. I remeber the first time we tried it was in the 70s . I was concerned that the spring pressure wold not be sufficient but it turned out i worried for nothing. I have since done many many units. I dont know how many. I tell the skeptics when they say their cone type is kaput and cant be rebuilt no matter what i say i tell them "fine give it to me I will dispose of it for you." (And a couple have too much to my delight. !) The first was a full race car and we aw the times come right back where they were after the reair .
The trick by the way to saving your posi whatever type it is is STAY IN THE WATEr for the entre burnout. By that I mean the wet spot after you rill out ofthe water trough. The tires still getthe heat but can slip enough to get a good burnout going without damage to the unit. Otherwise te lightest loaded wheel will sometimes grab with high traction and you are actually smoking just one wheel at 6000+rpm. I use a helper now to help stage if I am running a car with a non spool limited slip diff. I putrs an end to the damage. I love burnouts and was brutal when doing them. I hope I always am!
