Re: Need off topic help

How about a copy of your income tax return(s)? I know in the U.S. you file a return with Washington, the state in which you live, the state in which you work (sometimes) and even the county in which you live (in some areas). You have kept your returns for past number of years, pull out the earliest you have since you moved to Florida. That should be proof you moved from Connecticut. If the I.R.S. cannot be trusted to vouch for your whereabouts, who can you trust!

As someone else said, deal with the pencil-pushers in Connecticut, not the collection agency - although keep them abreast of your actions.

And if you really want to stir up a hornet's nest, write up a nice little letter detailing all your problems and send it off to the press back in CT. Many newspapers just love getting the lowdown on underhanded dealings in the government and its departments. I have a gut feeling you are not the only ex-Connecticut resident getting fleeced.

You should be able to prove that you moved out of there state and have some kind of paper work that shows you moved or are or were working in Florida.

Hi Nick,
Yes, that is what they are looking to collect (MV Personal Property Tax);
however, I moved and was a resident of Florida and the car was not in the
state. What do I do?
Thanks,
Ken

Ken,

The State of Connecticut DMV does not send out bills for past due
registration renewals. They do however send out notices that unpaid
Personal Property Taxes are owed on a vehicle which was registered in
CT., even if the registration has expired. The registration will not be
renewed until the municipality reports to DMV that the taxes were paid.
A registration is still assigned to the car until it is canceled at DMV,
even if expired.

The registered owner not the DMV must present the cancellation notice to
the tax collector's office of the city or town the vehile was registered
in. This takes the car off the municipal tax rolls. Each city or town in
CT. has a 3-digit tax code that is on the registration certificate.

You can call the tax office where you lived and check for unpaid MV
personal property tax owed. If that's the case.

Nick
