Re: low deck intakes

The B engine appeared in 1958 - 350-cid and 361-cid. It was used in American-built Plymouth, Dodge and DeSoto cars. Chrysler of Canada never used the 350 engine and offered the 361 engine starting in 1959.

The B block 383 appeared for 1959, again in Plymouth, Dodge and DeSoto cars - plus the Canadian-built 1959-60 Chrysler Saratoga, 1959 DeSoto Firedome and 1960 DeSoto Adventurer.

The RB block was introduced for 1959, 383 in the U.S. Windsor/Saratoga and 413 in the New Yorker/300-E and Imperial. The RB engine replaced the Chrysler poly/hemi block and was not offered in any other car line. The RB 383 was used again for 1960 and again only in U.S. Chryslers.

For 1961 the Chrysler Newport used the 361-cid V8 while the Windor switched to the B block 383 V8.

Due to the higher block height, the intake manifold on the RB 383 will not fit the B 383. Instead it shared the intake manifold with the RB 413. So that part is straight forward - intake manifolds interchange on the B engines and they interchange on the RB engines. But B manifolds will not fit the RB block, and vice versa.

The heads are another matter as the RB 383 uses the 361 heads due to the small bore on the RB 383. If you put the B383/RB413 heads on the RB 383 the valves will not open and instead smack the top of the block.

The 361 in a 1959 Dodge Custom Royal is a B block V8 and the intake manifold from a B block 383 will fit. The RB 383 won't as it is too wide.

Sorry, I meant to say the late '50s. The first B/RB was in '58 and, I believe, included a "Golden Lion" 383 in the Windsor. I don't think it survived very long after it's introduction.

Ron's exactly right, except the RB 383 was seen in the early 60's, not late. I believe it was only used in the Chrysler Windsor, but Bill Watson will clear that up.

Hi -

I don't know why your source would tell you a 383 intake won't fit a 361 unless the 383 is a relatively rare Chrysler RB383 from the late '60s. All the 'B' engines, 350,361,383(not the one rare one mentioned above) and 400) manifolds are interchangeable. All the 'RB' intakes, 413, 426, 440, arae interchangeable. The early RB 383 interchanges with the other RB intakes.
