Re: Speedo cable

It probably is the cable but just to let you guys know there is a place to lubricate the speedo head itself. I had one seize up in a 66 Charger I owned and it snapped the cable. The speedo was making squealing sounds off and on before it happened. On the back of the speedo there's a small hole with a cotton wick. You have to take the speedo out of the instrument cluster to see it. I was able to lubricate the wick and kept turning it over with a drill motor and a piece of the broken cable and got it to work freely again. I've never seen anything in a service manual about lubricating this wick. I guess it only has to be done every 40 or 50 years.

I put a new cable in my Polara, but that didn't fix it...it turned out
to be the odometer was dragging. I removed the odometer and the speedo
ran a lot smoother.

Take the cable out of the housing and use graphite
between your thumb and forefinger to lube it. That
might do it.
