in the night I remebered this also. On more than one occasion I have had cars to repair where the tach was the culprit and unhooking the tac wire broght the car back to life. new tach solved the problem. Also i did not mention coil partially becauuse i figure you have already subbed it to see. If not, a good used one is the best route if tests prove out. That way you arent out 60 bucks for nothing. Good shops always keep spares around , coils, ign modules and ballasts. They are called "trysees." That way no one gets burnt for unnecessary parts . Re coils though in a 40 year career I have had only three coils need replacing and i was in the specuialty tune up business for many years.
It is not impossible but it is unusual for a coil to go south. Mostly they get replaced when folks dont know what to do, like the guy who changes the computer first when there is a efi problem rather than find out what is wrong. I used to teach fuels to trade school techs. I always started with the 3 rules in EFI diagnosis is "It is never the computer, it is never the computer, it is never the computer. Not that in the odd case it couldnt be but in the fact that it is 99% of the time not and it often gets changed unnecssarily first and then sort of gets swept under the carpet in the cloud of confusion and big $$$$. I didnt want my guys to do that. Coils are not much different. It is not impossible than they fail but it is highly unlikely statistically. Never liked guessing at repairs . Always wanted to KNOW first what was wrong instead of throwing parts at the problem in the hope it would fix something.
