Jim,

The "M 37 1" actually has nothing to do with either the VIN or SON.  Your 
car's SON is "1001 0341" (scheduled built date - October 01, 1962).

Did you find the "M 37 1" under the antifreeze sticker on the rad support? 
I would also take a small mirror and check the underside of the rad support 
for more numbers.
