RE: 13's(1963 article Al Eckstrand)

The article is from "Stock Cars for the Drags" by "Hot Rod" Magazine 1963.Interview with Al Eckstrand and Jim Thornton This was the end of the 1962 Season so this is with a 413 bone stock with 4.56's, 9.00/14"(skinny!) Slicks in a 1962 Dart 330 weighing 3430 lbs.

Question:What shift points do you use?
Eckstrand:I shift out of Low at 7200rpm,and out of Intermediate at 7000.I have found this engine to respond to plenty of revs in the gears.Incidentally, we raise the line oil pressure in the Torqueflite from 92 to 108 pounds by a simple Allen Bolt Adjustment in the valve body.Takes about Fifteen minutes - and the extra pressure not only ghives you a bit faster shift, but there is less slippage in the clutches,so your transmission tends to last longer.
Thornton:We have found at above 6500 rpm to be optimum for both the automatic and stick transmission. This is about 1000 revs above the power peak.Power drops off pretty fast above that.

Please address private mail -- mail of interest to only one person -- directly to that person. I.e., send parts/car transactions and negotiations as well as other personal messages only to the intended recipient, not to the Clubhouse public address. This practice will protect your privacy, reduce the total volume of mail and fine tune the content signal to Mopar topic. Thanks!
