tempature gauge

Clear DayI have a problem with my temp. gauge. when I turn on the key, the 
needle goes all the way over to hot and stays there till I turn the car off. 
Is there some way to test if the sending unit is bad or something is wrong 
with the gauge. The sending unit is new, but sometimes they are faulty...
