Actually, both the K car and the Aspen/Volare were Motor Trend's Car of the Year, 1981 and 1976, respectively. I suspect the reason neither were panned by Car and Driver is the fact for all the negative comments both models have received over the years, they have proven to be durable vehicles.
How many X-cars, Mustang IIs and Vegas (and clones) do you see on the road these days? Not enough to say "a few". Reliants, Aries, Volares and Aspens, though, are another story.
They may not be good looking cars and had the usual 1970's/1980's fit and finish problems, but unlike their GM/Ford compatriots, they held together. The Aspen/Volare was last built in 1989 (Diplomat, Gran Fury, Caravelle, Fifth Avenue), the last year also for the Reliant and Aries.
