Re: 426 Hemi question

The car was delivered in June of 64, not sure when it was ordered, but it wasn't until late Feb. or so  he was notified that he could no longer get the Max Wedge and would get the Hemi instead. Car was dark blue, no radio, standard glass windows, push button auto. I don't know the dealers name, could probably find out, but it was in DeKalb , Illinois. Dekalb is and was a fairly small town, couldn't have been more than 1 Ply. dealer in town.

So far it sounds good.  What month did he get it, delivered not ordered.
What was the color and did it have a radio and real glass side windows.  Do
you happen to know the dealer it came from.  Dave o

It was a Belvedere, steel front end, full bench seat interior. He drove it
on the street some, even took my Mom to the drive-in with it. She was
evidently pretty impressed. He only kept it until 1966, it was sold to buy a
new 65 Hemi Coronet that Grand Spaulding Dodge had sitting on the lot.

As far as the Hemi being available to race teams only in 1964, I don't think
that's quite right. My father was a college student in 64 and bought a new
Plymouth Hemi hardtop. He originally ordered a Max Wedge car, but after
waiting a few months, he was told the wedge was no longer available. The
dealer gave him the option to have his car built with a Hemi or cancel it.
He took the Hemi and had one of the all steel hardtop cars. He was
definately not well connected and the car was not bought from a performance
oriented dealer.

First year for the STREET hemi would be the 1966 model year, thus
ordering could have been done in late 1965.

The 426 RACE hemi was available in 1964 but to factory race teams ONLY.

Now I know that former Ramcharger driver and Chrysler race engine
engineer Mike Buckel had a 65 Dodge Wagon with the first STREET hemi
in it. Where this car is, no one knows but it would truly be a 1 of
NONE!
