I think if you look at a can of DOT 4 the instructions will indicate backwards compatibility to 3. If you take a sample out of the master cylinder and pour it on a scrap piece of bodywork, e.g., old fender, DOT 3 will discolor the paint; silicone won't. Silicone is also purple-like in color I think. DOT 3- 4 probably smells different also.
