Dot 5 IS NOT COMPATIABLE!! I have cleaned to many systems out from commingling DOT 3 and 5 it just turns to mud and the pedal gets hard. DOT 5 1 is supposed to be compatible not 5!! Using DOT 5 you can bleed DOT 3 or 4 out completely and be OK, but once converted you can never bleed DOT 5 out because the silicone adheres to all the rubber parts and never goes away. The only resolution is replace any and all parts that contain rubber. Then and only then is when you purge the lines with denatured alcohol when the system is apart and then blow the lines out with air to evaporate the alcohol. Also when you flush your system out with any thing other than brake fluid especially alcohol based your going to damage the rubber parts ultimately damaging them to failure. Remember E85 will run in your car but will kill the rubber parts and gaskets in your fuel system. All brake fluids are fully compatible by law, including DOT 5. It is not advisable to do it, but they will work together. DOT 3 would have been the original. DOT 4 is highly hydroscopic(picks up moisture quickly-leading to rusted lines and stuck cylinders). DOT 5 is really good stuff but to convert fully, the system should be flushed out with denatured alcohol before filling. DOT 5 also doesn't hold moisture so any in the system will puddle somewhere and can lead to problems under heavy braking when the water can turn to steam. It needs a bit more regular attention than DOT 3 or 4. ----- Original Message ----- From: 62pluckedchicken@xxxxxxxxx To: 1962to1965mopars@xxxxxxxxxx Sent: Wednesday, March 11, 2009 11:47:47 AM GMT -05:00 US/Canada Eastern Subject: RE: Brake Fluid Dot 3 ? Thing is I don't know what's in there.. I assumed that DOT3 was the recommended fluid, but I wasn't sure and I thought you weren't suppose to mix types at all... Thanks.. I'll not worry about whether it's 3 or 4 spigot2039@xxxxxxxxxxx wrote: > > Use what you have in there; if you have DOT 3 it will work. DOT 4 will > work too, afaik.
