I believe the spring was to reduce noise from brake chatter.

Brake Drum Application
1965 Ply, B Body, Satellite
Drum Size 10" X 2 1/2"
Book is showing different drums... rear and front. Rear $35
Front $85
I have done complete brake jobs on 2, 1965 Satellites and I see no
difference in the drums. I can only expect that the front drums
maybe a bit thicker and have the ring to install the cooling spring?
