... a touch of extra sealer on the 4 corners ... yeah ... well, all
this work is the result of a guy using a bit too much of that stuff,
so I'm really gun-shy when it comes to applying any of it for this
application.
Hints as to how to do it right would be appreciated - I don't want to
risk *any* of it getting into the pan.

flat, the problem I see some guys do is they go crazy and hammer the heck
out of it. The objective is too flatten the surface not swedge it beyond
recognition. This is one area where patience is important. You might want
to
research some of the gasket companies to see if you can get one of the
new
steel reinforced gaskets for this cutie. Don't forget to put a touch of
extra sealer on the 4 corners, hopefully yhis will help out.
