Poly Strut Rod Bushings (installing)

I have poly bushings to go into my Valiant, and I have one of the poly strut rod bushings installed, but it was a nightmare to get in.

Would it still work if I cut it in two? Or is there a way to soften the poly material enough to squeeze it into its hole in the frame? Heat?

*Also, I read somewhere that the washers that go on either side of this bushing need to have the raised rim away from the bushing, rather than toward it, or premature wear would result. Any truth to this?
