A number of companies supplied paint for body shops, etc. - Ditzler, DuPont, 
Acme, Rinshed-Mason, Nason, Sherwin-Williams, and in Canada, CIL (Canadian 
Industries Limited).   Just to confuse car collectors north of the 49th, 
DuPont Canada used different codes from its formation in 1954 through to 
1970 although they went back to 1949 on almost all colours.  (DuPont Canada 
was split from CIL in 1954).  CIL used U.S. DuPont paint codes and 
tradenames prior to 1954 as its main shareholders were DuPont and ICI 
(Imperial Chemical Industries).

In Europe ICI and Glasso are the big names.

There were a number of small companies, as well.  Studebaker used a company 
called Jones for some colours.  Which also brings up another point. 
Companies did not rely upon one company for all their paints supplies. 
Although Chrysler is normally associated with Ditzler and GM with DuPont 
(DuPont actually owned 30% of GM stock for many years) they did use other 
firms.

All these companies supplied paint chip cards annually for the car and truck 
companies.   Just remember that paint formulations have changed drastically 
since 1990 due to ecological concerns.   The formulas given in 1964 for 
Ditzler enamel will, in almost all cases, not work with today's paints. 
The base paints and colour tints have all changed.  However, their are 
colour readers that can be used to create formulas for use with modern 
paints.

The site that has Ditzler colours, Auto Color Library, has slipped a bit. 
Their Studebaker chip list was great a few years back, missing only 1949, 
but they have replaced a number of car chip sheets with truck sheets.   Thus 
a number of years (1942, 1946, 1947, 1948 and 1949) have no car chips and 
the 1939 and 1940 years each have one page of the joint 1939-40 two page 
colour chip sheets.  Unfortunately, 1939 and 1940 both have sheet 2.

And neither site has Canadian colour chips.  U.S. sheets can be used from 
1967 and on, but prior to that there were unique colouts, especially with GM 
and Chrysler.

i do not think dupont paint was used in 64 all the books i have say ditzler 
or chrysler   i could be wrong if the car is canadian made
